Transition Year is compulsory in Our Lady’s School. It is a key part of the School’s six-year programme. It provides a bridge to help pupils make the transition from the highly-structured environment of Junior Cycle, to one where they will take greater responsibility for their own learning and decision making. It gives students the time and space to mature, develop self-confidence and take greater responsibility for their own learning and decision making. They experience the world of work and have opportunities to develop business and entrepreneurial skills.
Core subjects are studied throughout the year. The core subjects are, RE, Irish, English, Maths, Information Technology, European Language, Home Economics and Careers. Students also study a number of modules chosen from a wide range of options. These include, Art, Internet Studies, Chinese Language and Culture, Project Management, Fashion, Film Making, Journalism, Science Innovation, Gardening, Music Production, Driver Education, Economics, European Studies, Local Studies, Personal Development, Business, Engineering, First Aid and Drama. (this list may vary from year to year). Taster modules in Leaving Certificate subjects are provided to help the students make informed decisions about their subject choice for Senior Cycle.
T.Y. students also have the opportunity to participate in the European Youth Parliament, Model United Nations and Gaisce (The President’s Award) among many other optional activities. Many students take part in courses after school hours, such as Woodwork, Public Speaking and Sign Language. A trip to an Outdoor Activity Centre is also included in Transition Year.
